iPhone 17 Pro Max vs Pro: Model Differentiation

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 lineup in early September. Each year, a common question concerns the differences between the Pro models. The following outlines how Apple is expected to differentiate the iPhone 17 Pro Max from the iPhone 17 Pro.

Differentiation in Features

At times, Apple distinguishes its Pro models by introducing a specific camera feature to the Pro Max model before the smaller Pro model. For instance, the iPhone 15 Pro Max included 5x telephoto zoom, while the smaller Pro model had 3x until the iPhone 16 Pro received an upgrade.

Currently, there are no indications that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have an exclusive camera feature. Initial reports about a smaller Dynamic Island on the Pro Max are now uncertain.

Battery Life Differences

A significant change this year is expected in battery life. The Pro Max model has historically offered longer battery life compared to the Pro model, and this difference is anticipated to increase.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is reportedly increasing in thickness to accommodate a larger battery. Leaked product dimensions and hands-on videos have indicated this size change.

iPhone 16 Pro Max: 8.25mm thick
iPhone 17 Pro Max: 8.725mm thick

The iPhone 17 Pro is not expected to change in size. Aside from a larger camera bump design, its basic dimensions are expected to remain consistent with the iPhone 16 Pro.

As a result, the battery life advantage of the Pro Max model is expected to increase.

Current Battery Benchmarks

iPhone 16 Pro Max
- Up to 33 hours video playback
- Up to 29 hours streamed video playback
- Up to 105 hours audio playback
iPhone 16 Pro
- Up to 27 hours video playback
- Up to 22 hours streamed video playback
- Up to 85 hours audio playback

The iPhone 17 Pro Max is expected to have higher battery life estimates than previous iPhone models. The iPhone 17 Pro is expected to maintain similar battery performance as the previous year.

The iPhone 17 Pro is still expected to offer longer battery life than the new iPhone 17 Air, which is designed to be thinner.
