NASA's DART Mission Reveals Active Material Exchange in Binary Asteroid Systems

摘要

Recent analysis of NASA's DART mission data uncovers evidence of material transfer between binary asteroids, enhancing understanding of their dynamics and implications for planetary defense.

Approximately 15% of near-Earth asteroids exist as binary systems, where a smaller moon orbits a larger primary asteroid. Recent findings from NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission have provided direct visual evidence of material exchange between such binary asteroids.

In 2022, the DART spacecraft intentionally collided with Dimorphos, the moonlet of the asteroid Didymos. Prior to this impact, images captured by DART revealed bright, fan-shaped streaks on Dimorphos' surface. These patterns suggest that material from Didymos was transferred to Dimorphos through low-velocity impacts, akin to 'cosmic snowballs.' Jessica Sunshine, lead author of the study and professor at the University of Maryland, stated,

"We had the first direct proof for recent material transport in a binary asteroid system."

The research also offers visual confirmation of the Yarkovsky-O'Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack (YORP) effect, where sunlight causes small asteroids to spin faster, potentially leading to the ejection of surface material and the formation of moons. This phenomenon is believed to have contributed to the creation of Dimorphos from Didymos.

To validate these observations, the team conducted laboratory experiments simulating the low-velocity impacts observed. The results mirrored the fan-like patterns seen on Dimorphos, reinforcing the hypothesis of active material exchange in binary asteroid systems.

These insights are crucial for understanding the evolution of near-Earth asteroids and enhancing planetary defense strategies. The European Space Agency's Hera mission, scheduled to arrive at Didymos in December 2026, aims to further investigate these findings and assess the aftermath of the DART impact.
