Israel Intensifies Strikes on Lebanon Amid Escalating Regional Conflict

Résumé

Israel has launched extensive airstrikes targeting Hezbollah positions in Lebanon, including Beirut, following Hezbollah's missile attacks on northern Israel. Concurrently, Iran faces a leadership vacuum after the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Israeli airstrike.

Israel has intensified its military operations in Lebanon, conducting extensive airstrikes on Hezbollah positions across the country, including the capital, Beirut. This escalation follows Hezbollah's recent missile and drone attacks targeting northern Israel. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that their strikes aimed at "senior terrorist elements of the Hezbollah terrorist organization in the Beirut area" and other strategic locations.

The Lebanese Health Ministry reported that at least 52 people have been killed and over 150 injured due to the Israeli airstrikes. The attacks have also led to the displacement of tens of thousands of residents, with many seeking shelter in collective centers.

In response to the escalating conflict, Israel has deployed additional troops into southern Lebanon and issued evacuation orders to residents of more than 80 villages in the region. Hezbollah has declared its readiness for "open war," signaling a significant escalation in hostilities.

Concurrently, Iran is grappling with a leadership crisis following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike. An interim leadership council has been established, comprising President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, and a member of the Guardian Council, to temporarily assume the duties of the supreme leader.

The Assembly of Experts, an 88-member panel of Shiite clerics, is tasked with selecting a new supreme leader. Among the potential candidates is Mojtaba Khamenei, the late leader's son, whose candidacy has sparked debate over the possibility of a hereditary succession.

The situation remains fluid, with regional tensions escalating and the international community closely monitoring developments.
