Godot Maintainers Overwhelmed by AI-Generated Code Submissions
The open-source Godot game engine's maintainers are facing challenges due to an influx of AI-generated code submissions, leading to increased workload and concerns about code quality.
The maintainers of the open-source Godot game engine are grappling with a surge of AI-generated code submissions, commonly referred to as "AI slop," which is significantly increasing their workload and raising concerns about code quality. Rémi Verschelde, the project's lead maintainer, expressed that handling these submissions has become "increasingly draining and demoralizing" for the team.
As an open-source platform, Godot allows users to contribute code via pull requests on GitHub. However, the rise in AI-generated contributions has led to challenges in maintaining code quality. Game designer Adriaan de Jongh noted that many of these AI-generated changes "often make no sense," and contributors submitting them frequently do not understand the code they are proposing. He described the situation as "a massive time waster" for reviewers.
Verschelde highlighted the difficulty in discerning whether errors in submissions are due to human mistakes or AI generation, stating that maintainers are "having to second-guess" every pull request from new contributors multiple times per day. He emphasized that while Godot aims to be welcoming to new contributors, the current situation is straining the team's capacity, expressing uncertainty about how long they can sustain this level of review.
In response to these challenges, Godot has updated its contribution guidelines to discourage the use of AI-generated code. The guidelines now state that "the use of AI to contribute to Godot is discouraged, and contributions made entirely by AI are prohibited." Contributors are expected to disclose any AI assistance and ensure they fully understand and have tested the code they submit.
The Godot team is considering increasing funding to hire more maintainers as a potential solution to manage the influx of AI-generated submissions. Verschelde mentioned that additional funding could help "deal with the slop" by allowing the project to pay for more maintainers.
