Apple is reportedly developing integrated privacy screen technology for future MacBooks, aiming to restrict off-axis viewing angles and enhance user privacy. According to a report from market research firm Omdia, Apple plans to implement this feature within the next three years. The technology would ensure that only individuals directly in front of the display can view its contents, while those at side angles would see a darkened or obscured image.
This initiative aligns with similar advancements in the industry. Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra is set to debut a privacy display feature that limits side-angle visibility. Samsung's solution combines Flex Magic Pixel OLED hardware with software controls, allowing users to customize privacy settings for specific apps, password entry, or notification pop-ups. Users can also adjust the intensity of the viewing angle restriction or disable it entirely.
Apple has previously explored comparable technologies. In 2023, the company filed patents aimed at preventing "shoulder surfing." One patent describes a privacy film for curved displays, such as those on iPhones, that limits light emission to a narrow forward angle. Another outlines adjustable viewing-angle technology for flat screens, like those on Macs, using louvres or liquid crystal elements to restrict side-on visibility.
The Omdia report suggests that MacBooks will adopt similar technology by 2029, coinciding with expectations that Apple will transition its MacBook lineup to Samsung-supplied OLED panels over the next few years. The MacBook Pro is anticipated to adopt OLED displays later this year or in early 2027, with the MacBook Air expected to follow.
While Omdia's projections are based on analyst forecasting rather than insider knowledge, and Apple's patents do not guarantee a shipping product, the introduction of privacy screen technology in MacBooks would represent a significant step in enhancing user privacy and security.
