State of Emergency Declared in Ōtorohanga Amid Widespread Flooding
Heavy rainfall in Ōtorohanga has led to significant flooding, prompting evacuations and a local State of Emergency declaration.
Heavy overnight rainfall in the Ōtorohanga District has resulted in widespread flooding, leading to the evacuation of approximately 80 residents and the declaration of a local State of Emergency. Mayor Rodney Dow stated that many evacuees are being accommodated at Te Kotahitanga Marae.
"There is currently a power outage affecting the Kawhia area. Power was turned off as a safety precaution while evacuations were being carried out. Multiple roads and bridges in the district have been compromised," he said.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand reported responding to 10 to 15 flood-related calls, assisting with evacuations and supporting swift water rescue teams.
An Emergency Operations Centre has been established in the Council Chambers to coordinate the response. Residents are advised to avoid floodwaters and contact the council's call centre at 0800 734 000 for assistance, or dial 111 in emergencies.
MetService has issued multiple weather alerts for the coming days, including heavy rain warnings for Bay of Plenty east of Ōpōtiki and Gisborne north of Tolaga Bay, as well as strong wind warnings for Gisborne south of Poverty Bay, Wairarapa, and the Tararua District.
Flooding has led to road closures in the region. State Highway 39 between Pirongia and Ōtorohanga is closed, with a detour available via State Highway 3. State Highway 3 north of Mangaorongo Road at the Stream Bridge is also closed.
Authorities urge residents to stay informed and exercise caution during this period of severe weather.
