MetService Issues Red Heavy Rain Warning for Northland
MetService has issued a Red Heavy Rain Warning for parts of Northland, forecasting up to 320mm of rain and potential severe weather impacts.
MetService has issued a Red Heavy Rain Warning for Northland, specifically for areas east of Kaikohe, from Doubtless Bay to Whangārei, effective from 4pm today until early Friday morning. The forecast anticipates 270 to 320 mm of rain, with peak rates increasing to 25 to 40 mm per hour from Thursday afternoon through early Friday. Thunderstorms are also possible during this period.
Red Warnings are reserved for the most extreme weather events, indicating significant impacts and disruptions. MetService meteorologist John Law emphasized the urgency, stating, ">People need to act now as immediate action is required to protect people, animals, and property from the impact of the weather."
Residents in flood-prone areas, or those recently affected by landslides, are advised to have an evacuation plan. Northland Civil Defence group controller Damien Rio urged, ">If you live in a flood-prone area, or in an area recently affected by landslides, make sure you have a plan for where you’ll go if you needed to evacuate – friends or whānau are the best first option."
Strong to gale-force winds are also expected, with gusts up to 120 km/h in exposed regions. Auckland Transport has cautioned that these conditions may impact travel across the Auckland Harbour Bridge, potentially leading to lane closures or full closures to ensure safety.
Residents are encouraged to stay updated with official channels and follow guidance from emergency services during this severe weather event.
