Astronomers Identify Earth-Sized Exoplanet Candidate in Nearby Star's Habitable Zone

Résumé

Scientists have detected a potential Earth-sized exoplanet, HD 137010 b, orbiting a Sun-like star 146 light-years away, with conditions that may allow for liquid water.

Astronomers have identified a potential Earth-sized exoplanet, designated HD 137010 b, orbiting a Sun-like star approximately 146 light-years from Earth. The candidate planet, detected through data from NASA's Kepler Space Telescope's K2 mission, exhibits characteristics similar to Earth, including a diameter about 6% larger and an orbital period of approximately 355 days.

HD 137010 b orbits a K-type dwarf star, which is cooler and dimmer than our Sun. Consequently, the planet receives only about 29% of the stellar flux that Earth does, placing it near the outer edge of the star's habitable zone. This suggests that, under certain atmospheric conditions, liquid water could exist on its surface.

The discovery was led by an international team of scientists, including Dr. Alexander Venner from the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany. The team identified the planet by observing a single transit event—a brief dimming of the star's light as the planet passed in front of it. Dr. Venner noted that this is the first time an Earth-sized planet with such orbital properties has been detected transiting a Sun-like star bright enough for substantial follow-up observations.

While the initial findings are promising, further observations are necessary to confirm the planet's existence and to assess its atmospheric composition and potential habitability. Future missions, such as NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the European Space Agency's CHEOPS (Characterising ExOPlanets Satellite), may provide additional data to validate this discovery.
