U.S. Navy Shoots Down Iranian Drone Near Aircraft Carrier in Arabian Sea
A U.S. Navy fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone approaching the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, escalating tensions between the two nations.
A U.S. Navy F-35C fighter jet shot down an Iranian Shahed-139 drone that approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, U.S. Central Command reported on Tuesday. The drone "aggressively approached" the carrier with "unclear intent" and continued its course despite de-escalatory measures taken by U.S. forces operating in international waters, according to Capt. Tim Hawkins, a Central Command spokesperson.
The incident occurred approximately 500 miles from Iran's southern coast. No American personnel were harmed, and no U.S. equipment was damaged during the encounter.
Hours later, Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces harassed the U.S.-flagged merchant vessel Stena Imperative in the Strait of Hormuz. Two boats and an Iranian Mohajer drone approached the ship "at high speeds and threatened to board and seize the tanker," Hawkins stated. The guided-missile destroyer USS McFaul responded, escorting the Stena Imperative with defensive air support from the U.S. Air Force, ensuring the merchant vessel's safe passage.
These developments come amid heightened tensions between the United States and Iran. President Donald Trump has indicated a willingness to use military action in response to Iran's crackdown on nationwide protests and to encourage negotiations over its nuclear program.
Despite the escalating incidents, diplomatic efforts continue. Talks between U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian officials are reportedly still planned, with potential hosting by Turkey or Oman. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has signaled openness to "fair and equitable" negotiations.
Meanwhile, the U.S. has bolstered its military presence in the region, deploying additional service members, warships, and air defense systems near Iran.
