Pentagon deploys third aircraft carrier to Middle East amid tensions with Iran
The U.S. Navy sent the USS Theodore Roosevelt and its strike group to the Middle East, joining two carriers already in the region, as the administration considers further actions against Iran.
The U.S. Navy dispatched the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt and its accompanying strike group from San Diego on Sunday, with an estimated 9,000 to 10,000 service members aboard. The deployment is expected to reach the Middle East in November, adding a third carrier to the area where USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are already operating.
The Pentagon has not clarified whether the new deployment is intended to replace an existing vessel or to increase overall force posture. Navy officials said the carrier has been stocked with additional food, hygiene supplies, and other necessities to support a prolonged presence, and that improvements have been made to onboard communications and recreational equipment.
"That means new entertainment equipment on the mess decks, more durable fitness equipment, spare cardio machines ready for our placement, and even holiday materials purchased ahead of time," said Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Daryl Caudle in a video briefing.
The move comes as the administration reviews its policy toward Iran following the recent rejection of a proposed cease-fire and ongoing economic sanctions. Treasury officials continue to enforce measures aimed at limiting Iran's access to international finance.
The Pentagon and U.S. Central Command did not provide additional comment on the deployment.
