Discovery of Tiny Dinosaur Foskeia pelendonum Sheds Light on Ornithopod Evolution

सारांश

Paleontologists have identified Foskeia pelendonum, a diminutive ornithopod from Spain's Early Cretaceous period, offering new insights into dinosaur evolution.

Paleontologists have identified a new species of small-bodied ornithopod dinosaur, Foskeia pelendonum, from fossils found in the Castrillo de la Reina Formation in Burgos Province, Spain. The fossils, representing at least five individuals, were first uncovered by Fidel Torcida Fernández-Baldor of the Dinosaur Museum of Salas de los Infantes.

The genus name Foskeia is derived from the ancient Greek words 'fos' meaning 'light' and 'skei' from 'boskein' meaning 'to forage,' reflecting its small size and presumed herbivorous habits. The species name pelendonum honors the Pelendones, a Celtiberian tribe from the Fuentes del Duero region near the type locality.

Foskeia pelendonum lived during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 125 million years ago. The species was notably small, with an estimated length of about 50 to 60 centimeters and a height not exceeding 30 centimeters.

The discovery of Foskeia pelendonum provides valuable insights into the evolution of ornithopod dinosaurs, particularly the Rhabdodontomorpha clade. The fossils bridge a 70-million-year evolutionary gap, enhancing our understanding of the diversification and adaptation of these dinosaurs.

Histological analysis indicates that the largest specimen was a sexually mature adult, with bone microstructure suggesting a high metabolic rate akin to small mammals or birds.

The study also suggests that Foskeia pelendonum occupied a distinct ecological niche, likely navigating dense vegetation in short bursts. Its anatomy and evolutionary placement indicate that diversification was unfolding even among the smallest members of the dinosaur world.

The findings have been published in the journal Papers in Palaeontology, contributing to the broader understanding of dinosaur evolution and the diversity of early ornithopods.
