Thwaites Glacier's Underwater Tsunamis Accelerate Ice Melt

Scientists have identified that the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the "Doomsday Glacier," generates underwater tsunamis during calving events, with waves reaching heights between 30 and over 300 feet. These waves mix deep, warm ocean waters with cooler surface waters, accelerating the melting of the glacier and surrounding sea ice. Dr. Alex Brearley, an oceanographer with the British Antarctic Survey, emphasized the importance of understanding these processes to improve predictions of sea ice melt.

To study these phenomena, researchers are deploying underwater torpedo drones to observe the glacier's subsurface activities. The Thwaites Glacier is a significant contributor to global sea level rise; its complete collapse could raise sea levels by approximately two feet. This event could potentially destabilize the entire West Antarctic Ice Sheet, leading to a total sea level rise of up to ten feet. The discovery of these underwater tsunamis highlights the complex interactions between glacier dynamics and ocean processes, underscoring the need for continued research in this area.
