Lando Norris Clinches First F1 World Championship in Abu Dhabi Finale
Lando Norris secured his maiden Formula 1 World Championship by finishing third at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen by two points in the season standings.
Lando Norris secured his first Formula 1 World Championship title at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, becoming the 11th British F1 champion and the first from Britain since Lewis Hamilton in 2020. Despite finishing third in the race—behind Max Verstappen, who won, and teammate Oscar Piastri—Norris accumulated enough points to edge Verstappen by two points in the final standings. Verstappen, who dominated the late season and had hoped to clinch his fifth consecutive title, fell just short as Norris maintained composure under immense pressure.
Norris, 26, has had a long journey in F1, beginning with kart racing at age 8 and entering McLaren as a test driver. He finished the season with seven wins and 423 points. Piastri, who also won seven races but none since August, finished third overall, 13 points behind Norris. Notably, Verstappen’s title hopes were boosted after both McLaren drivers were disqualified in Las Vegas two races prior.
The race featured strategic tension, including a pivotal five-second penalty for Yuki Tsunoda and crucial tire strategies. Despite starting alongside Verstappen on the front row and having to deal with traffic and attacks from Leclerc, Norris held on to clinch the title, celebrating emotionally with his team and family.
