ESA Initiates Competition for Commercial Cargo Services to ISS by 2028

Summary

The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched a competition inviting European companies to develop commercial cargo transportation services to the International Space Station (ISS) by 2028.

The European Space Agency (ESA) has announced a competition for European companies to develop commercial cargo transportation services to the International Space Station (ISS) by 2028. This initiative aims to establish a European capability for delivering and returning cargo to and from low Earth orbit.

ESA's call for proposals specifies that participating companies should demonstrate the ability to transport a minimum of two tonnes of pressurized cargo to the ISS and return at least one tonne to Earth by the end of 2028. This effort is part of ESA's broader strategy to enhance Europe's human exploration capabilities and prepare for future low Earth orbit destinations.

"ESA and its Member States are preparing for when the International Space Station is retired: an environment where space agencies are customers rather than owners of space infrastructure," said Frank De Winne, ESA’s International Space Station Manager.

The competition is structured in phases, beginning with preliminary design and securing third-party funding, followed by further development and risk mitigation, and culminating in a demonstration mission. ESA has allocated €2 million for the initial phase and plans to support up to two companies in this endeavor.

This initiative reflects ESA's commitment to fostering commercial partnerships and ensuring Europe's active role in future space exploration missions.
