Bitcoin Nears $80,000 Amid Market Volatility

Summary

Bitcoin's price approaches the $80,000 threshold as investors shift away from riskier assets.

Bitcoin's price declined early Friday, approaching the critical $80,000 support level, as investors moved away from riskier assets toward more defensive options. The cryptocurrency reached $80,548 around 7:30 a.m. ET, marking its lowest point since April 11. This downturn follows a series of liquidations of highly leveraged crypto positions in October.

Citi analyst Alex Saunders noted in a client note that "price action has been unimpressive across the large tokens, BTC dipping below the year-start price as long-time and larger holders of the token have become more active." He also highlighted that "ETF flows, the main driver of BTC prices, are also drying up, adding to the short-term performance worries."

Bitcoin has since recovered some losses, trading down 4% at $82,939.59, according to Coin Metrics. The cryptocurrency has fallen 12% since the beginning of the week and approximately 26% over the past month.

The decline coincides with pressure in the U.S. stock market, prompting investors to shift from volatile assets like cryptocurrencies and artificial intelligence stocks to safe-havens such as gold. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2% on Thursday, as a rally sparked by Nvidia's earnings lost momentum, reflecting increased scrutiny of high AI valuations. Investors in AI often hold Bitcoin, linking the two trades.

Cryptocurrency-related stocks also declined. Strategy Inc., a Bitcoin treasury firm, fell 2% on the day and is down 42% over the past month. American Bitcoin and Riot Platforms shed 7% and 4% in Thursday's session, respectively.

Bitcoin is now down 9% since the beginning of the year, despite reaching a record price just above $126,000 in early October amid the administration's pro-crypto policies. It is now more than 30% below that peak.

Sebastian Pedro Bea, chief investment officer at crypto asset management firm ReserveOne, commented, "We're in very oversold territory for bitcoin right now."
