Disney Warns of Potential Blackout of ABC and ESPN on YouTube TV Amid Contract Negotiations
Disney has alerted YouTube TV subscribers that ABC, ESPN, and other networks may be removed if a new distribution agreement isn't reached by October 30.
Disney has informed YouTube TV subscribers that its networks, including ABC and ESPN, may be removed from the platform if a new distribution agreement is not finalized by October 30. The current contract is set to expire at 11:59 p.m. ET on that date.
A Disney spokesperson stated that if a fair deal isn't reached soon, YouTube TV customers will lose access to ESPN, ABC, and other marquee programming, including NFL, college football, NBA, and NHL seasons.
YouTube TV, which has approximately 10 million subscribers, is seeking more favorable terms due to its scale. A spokesperson for the service mentioned that Disney is proposing costly economic terms that would raise prices for YouTube TV customers and limit their choices, while benefiting Disney's own live TV products. Without an agreement, YouTube TV will have to remove Disney's content and, if it remains unavailable for an extended period, will offer subscribers a $20 credit.
This development follows a similar situation last month when YouTube TV and NBCUniversal reached a temporary extension to avoid a blackout before finalizing a deal. In that instance, YouTube TV offered subscribers a $10 credit if NBCUniversal programming was off the air for an extended period.
The ongoing negotiations highlight the challenges in the evolving media landscape, where streaming services and content providers are continually renegotiating terms to balance costs and content availability for consumers.
