London Police Investigate Allegations Against Prince Andrew Amid Royal Title Relinquishment

Summary

The Metropolitan Police are investigating claims that Prince Andrew sought damaging information on Virginia Giuffre in 2011, coinciding with his recent decision to relinquish royal titles.

The Metropolitan Police in London are actively investigating allegations that Prince Andrew requested a bodyguard to obtain damaging information on Virginia Giuffre in 2011. According to reports, Andrew provided the officer with Giuffre's birthdate and Social Security number to uncover any criminal records or compromising details. It remains unclear whether the officer acted on this request. Giuffre's family has stated that she had no criminal record.

This development follows Buckingham Palace's recent announcement that Prince Andrew has agreed to relinquish his Duke of York title and other royal honors. This decision came after emails surfaced indicating that Andrew maintained contact with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein longer than previously admitted. In a statement, Andrew said, "In discussion with The King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family. I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life."

Virginia Giuffre, who died by suicide in April, had accused Prince Andrew of forcing her into sexual acts when she was 17, alleging that Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell, trafficked her to Andrew. The two reached an out-of-court settlement in 2022, with Andrew denying the allegations. Giuffre's family views Andrew's decision to relinquish his titles as "vindication for our sister and survivors everywhere" and has called on King Charles III to strip him of the title of prince.

British Energy Secretary Ed Miliband commented on the allegations, stating, "These are deeply concerning allegations. I think people want to look at those allegations and what the substance is behind them. But if that is correct, that is absolutely not the way that close protection officers should be used."

As part of relinquishing his titles, Andrew will no longer be known as the Duke of York and will give up other honors, including Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order and Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. He will retain the title of prince, which he was given at birth.
