Trump Links $20 Billion U.S. Aid to Argentina's Election Outcome
President Donald Trump has indicated that a $20 billion U.S. aid package to Argentina is contingent upon President Javier Milei's success in the upcoming midterm elections.
During a meeting at the White House on Tuesday, President Donald Trump suggested that the continuation of a $20 billion U.S. aid package to Argentina hinges on the political success of President Javier Milei in the forthcoming midterm elections.
"We think he's going to win. He should win. And if he does win, we're going to be very helpful," Trump stated. "And if he doesn't win, we're not going to waste our time because you have somebody whose philosophy has no chance of making Argentina great again."
Argentina is scheduled to hold legislative elections on October 26, with Milei's La Libertad Avanza party aiming to increase its representation in Congress. The outcome is expected to influence the country's economic policies and its relationship with the United States.
The U.S. Treasury recently announced a $20 billion currency swap agreement to support Argentina's peso and bolster its foreign currency reserves. This intervention followed a significant electoral defeat for Milei's party in Buenos Aires province, which had led to market instability and a decline in the peso's value.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed confidence in Milei's party's prospects, stating, "We're confident that the president's party will—and the coalition will—do well in the election, and this aid is predicated on robust policies." He added that a return to previous policies would prompt a reassessment of U.S. support.
Opposition figures have criticized Trump's remarks. Jorge Taiana, a leading candidate for the Peronist party, accused Trump of "extorting the Argentine people" and emphasized that the electorate should not accept foreign influence in their voting decisions.
Milei's spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, clarified that Trump's comments referred to the 2027 presidential election, asserting that U.S. support is contingent on Argentina maintaining a government aligned with certain ideological principles.
The peso experienced a slight decline following Trump's statements but remained higher than its level prior to the U.S. Treasury's intervention. The upcoming elections are seen as pivotal for Argentina's economic trajectory and its diplomatic relations with the United States.
