Argentina's President Milei's Party Wins Midterm Elections, Bolstering Economic Reform Agenda
President Javier Milei's La Libertad Avanza party secured a significant victory in Argentina's midterm legislative elections, strengthening his mandate for economic reforms amid recent financial market instability.
President Javier Milei's libertarian party, La Libertad Avanza (LLA), achieved a significant victory in Argentina's midterm legislative elections, securing 40.8% of the vote compared to 31.6% for the Peronist opposition alliance, with 95% of votes counted. This outcome is expected to bolster Milei's ambitious economic reform agenda, which had faced challenges following recent financial market turbulence.
The election results grant LLA 64 of the 127 available seats in the lower house, increasing its total to 92. This gain enhances the government's capacity to implement reforms over the next two years. Economics professor Amilcar Collante commented, "This gives the government the ability to make reforms over the next two years."
The victory comes after a period of investor concern over the stability of Milei's reform initiatives, which had led to a run on the peso. The United States, a key ally, had previously provided a bailout package, with further support contingent on the election outcome. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has pledged up to $40 billion in support for Argentina, with approximately $2 billion already spent to stabilize the peso.
In response to the election results, former President Mauricio Macri, leader of the center-right PRO party and an ally of Milei, suggested strengthening the cabinet to improve governance, stating he was ready to assist. He remarked, "Milei has my number."
Following the election, the Argentine peso strengthened over 7% against the dollar on crypto-based currency exchanges, reversing its recent decline.
