Brewers Execute Unprecedented 8-6-2 Double Play in NLCS Game 1 Against Dodgers
In a pivotal moment during Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, the Milwaukee Brewers turned an extraordinary 8-6-2 double play, halting a potential Los Angeles Dodgers rally and maintaining a scoreless tie.
In the fourth inning of Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, the Milwaukee Brewers executed a rare 8-6-2 double play, preventing the Los Angeles Dodgers from capitalizing on a bases-loaded situation. With one out, Dodgers' Max Muncy hit a deep fly ball to center field. Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick leaped to make the catch, but the ball deflected off his glove, struck the wall, and landed back in his glove.
The Dodgers' baserunners, misinterpreting the play as a catch, hesitated. Teoscar Hernández, who was on third base, retreated before attempting to score, allowing the Brewers to throw him out at home. Catcher William Contreras then stepped on third base to force out Will Smith, who had returned to second base, completing the double play.
This sequence marked the first 8-6-2 double play in MLB postseason history. Despite this defensive highlight, the Dodgers secured a 2-1 victory, with Blake Snell pitching eight shutout innings and Freddie Freeman contributing a solo home run.
Game 2 of the series is scheduled for Tuesday evening at American Family Field in Milwaukee.
