Brewers Execute Unprecedented Double Play in NLCS Game 1 Against Dodgers
Milwaukee Brewers turn a rare 8-6-2 double play to halt Los Angeles Dodgers' scoring opportunity in NLCS Game 1.
In the fourth inning of Game 1 of the National League Championship Series, the Milwaukee Brewers executed an unusual 8-6-2 double play against the Los Angeles Dodgers, preventing a potential scoring opportunity. With the bases loaded and one out, Dodgers' third baseman Max Muncy hit a deep fly ball to center field. Brewers center fielder Sal Frelick leaped to make the catch, but the ball deflected off his glove, hit the wall, and then landed back in his glove.
Believing Frelick had made the catch, the Dodgers' baserunners returned to their original bases. Recognizing the ball was still in play, Frelick threw to shortstop Joey Ortiz, who relayed to catcher William Contreras at home plate, forcing out Teoscar Hernández. Contreras then stepped on third base to force out Will Smith, completing the double play and ending the inning.
Muncy commented on the play, stating, "It's definitely the worst fielder's choice, double play I've ever hit into in my life."
The Dodgers challenged the call, but after review, the umpires confirmed the double play, maintaining the scoreless tie at that point in the game.
