Florida Man Arrested for Allegedly Starting Deadly Pacific Palisades Fire
Jonathan Rinderknecht, 29, has been arrested for allegedly igniting the Pacific Palisades Fire in Los Angeles, which resulted in 12 deaths and the destruction of over 6,000 structures.
Federal authorities have arrested Jonathan Rinderknecht, a 29-year-old Florida resident, in connection with the Pacific Palisades Fire that devastated Los Angeles in January. The blaze claimed 12 lives and destroyed more than 6,000 structures, marking it as one of the city's most destructive wildfires.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Rinderknecht allegedly started the fire on January 1, 2025, after completing an Uber shift. He is accused of using a lighter to ignite vegetation near a hiking trail. The fire initially smoldered underground before reigniting on January 7 due to high winds, leading to widespread destruction.
Investigators linked Rinderknecht to the fire through video evidence and 911 calls he made to report the blaze. A lighter matching one found in his car was also discovered at the scene. Additionally, authorities noted that months prior to the incident, Rinderknecht used ChatGPT to create an image depicting a burning forest with people fleeing, suggesting a premeditated fascination with fire.
"While we cannot undo the damage and destruction that was done, we hope his arrest and the charges against him bring some measure of justice to the victims of this horrific tragedy," said Acting U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass commented on the arrest, stating, "More than nine months ago, our city faced one of the most devastating periods our region had ever seen. Lives were tragically lost. Thousands of homes were destroyed. Our heroic firefighters fought the blaze valiantly with no rest. Each day that families are displaced is a day too long and as we are working tirelessly to bring Angelenos home, we are also working towards closure and towards justice - and today is a step forward in that process."
Rinderknecht was arrested in Florida and is expected to appear in court on Wednesday. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 20 years in federal prison.
