NASA's Perseverance Rover Captures Possible Image of Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS Over Mars
NASA's Perseverance rover on Mars may have photographed interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS as it passed near the Red Planet.
On October 4, 2025, NASA's Perseverance rover captured an image of a bright streak in the Martian sky, potentially depicting interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. This observation coincided with the comet's closest approach to Mars, approximately 30 million kilometers away.
Comet 3I/ATLAS, first detected in July 2025, is the third known interstellar object to traverse our solar system, following 'Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. Its hyperbolic trajectory indicates an origin beyond our solar system, and it is traveling at a velocity nearly twice that of its predecessors.
NASA had planned for Perseverance, along with other assets like the Hubble and Webb space telescopes, to observe 3I/ATLAS during its passage. The recent image from Perseverance's Right Navigation Camera aligns with the comet's predicted position, suggesting a successful observation.
While the image has generated excitement, NASA has yet to confirm definitively that the streak represents 3I/ATLAS. Further analysis is required to validate this identification.
Observations of interstellar objects like 3I/ATLAS provide valuable insights into the composition and behavior of celestial bodies originating outside our solar system, enhancing our understanding of the broader cosmos.
