Rite Aid Ceases Operations Nationwide Amid Second Bankruptcy
Rite Aid has closed all its U.S. locations following a second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, ending its 63-year presence in the pharmacy sector.
Rite Aid, once the third-largest drugstore chain in the United States, has closed all its locations nationwide following a second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The company, founded in Pennsylvania in 1962, had been a prominent fixture alongside competitors CVS and Walgreens.
An announcement on Rite Aid's website stated, "All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support." The website now provides information for former customers seeking prescription and immunization records, as well as a tool to locate alternative pharmacies.
The closure follows a series of financial challenges for the company. In October 2023, Rite Aid filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing significant debt and numerous lawsuits related to its alleged role in the opioid crisis. After emerging from bankruptcy in September 2024, the company filed again in May 2025, leading to the liquidation of its remaining assets and the closure of its last stores by September.
During its restructuring efforts, Rite Aid sold prescription files from 650 locations and 64 physical stores to CVS, which remains the largest brick-and-mortar pharmacy chain in the U.S. Other buyers included Walgreens, Albertsons, and Kroger. Despite these efforts, the company was unable to achieve long-term financial stability.
The rapid decline of Rite Aid has raised concerns about the emergence of "pharmacy deserts" in certain communities, where residents may now face challenges accessing essential medications and health services. The closures have also resulted in significant job losses among pharmacists, technicians, and retail employees.
As Rite Aid concludes its operations, customers are advised to transfer their prescriptions to other pharmacies to ensure continuity of care.
