Rite Aid Announces Closure of All U.S. Stores Amid Bankruptcy Proceedings
Rite Aid is closing all its U.S. locations following a second bankruptcy filing, transferring prescriptions to other pharmacies.
Rite Aid, the Philadelphia-based pharmacy chain, has announced the closure of all its U.S. stores as part of ongoing bankruptcy proceedings. The company, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in October 2023, has been gradually reducing its retail footprint over the past two years.
In a statement on its website, Rite Aid expressed gratitude to its customers: "All Rite Aid stores have now closed. We thank our loyal customers for their many years of support."
The closures affect numerous states, including California, Pennsylvania, New York, and Michigan. In Michigan alone, all 186 stores are set to close by the end of September, with prescriptions being transferred to Walgreens.
Rite Aid's financial struggles have been compounded by declining sales and numerous lawsuits related to its alleged role in the opioid crisis. The company has faced accusations of filling unlawful prescriptions for controlled substances, leading to significant legal challenges.
Customers are advised to contact their local Rite Aid stores or visit the company's website for information on prescription transfers and to retrieve pharmacy records before the final shutdown.
