Rescue Efforts Continue After Deadly School Collapse in Indonesia
Rescuers in East Java, Indonesia, are working to locate survivors following the collapse of the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School, which resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Rescue teams in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia, are intensifying efforts to locate survivors after the Al-Khoziny Islamic Boarding School collapsed during afternoon prayers on Monday. The incident has resulted in at least six fatalities and approximately 100 injuries, with dozens still feared trapped under the debris.
The collapse occurred as hundreds of students, primarily teenage boys, gathered for prayers. Authorities have reported that cries for help can still be heard from beneath the rubble, prompting a race against time to rescue those trapped. Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "We are currently racing against time because it is possible that we can still save lives of those we have detected within the golden hours."
Rescue operations have been complicated by the building's unstable structure. The school was undergoing unauthorized construction to add two additional floors, which the existing foundation could not support. Sidoarjo's regent confirmed that the school's management had not obtained the necessary permits for the expansion.
Survivors have recounted the harrowing moments leading up to the collapse. Thirteen-year-old Muhammad Rijalul Qoib described hearing the sound of falling rocks that grew louder before the building gave way. He managed to escape despite being struck by debris.
The Indonesian government has pledged support for the victims and their families. Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf stated that assistance, including shelters, food, clothing, and medical supplies, will be provided. Psychologists are also being deployed to offer psychosocial support to those affected.
As rescue operations continue, authorities are urging the public and building managers to adhere strictly to construction safety standards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
