Disney Announces Streaming Price Increases Amid Jimmy Kimmel Controversy
Disney plans to raise streaming service prices in October, coinciding with the reinstatement of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' after a suspension over controversial remarks.
Disney has announced upcoming price increases for its streaming services, set to take effect on October 21. The ad-supported Disney+ plan will rise by $2 to $11.99 per month, while the ad-free Disney+ Premium plan will increase by $3 to $18.99 per month. Bundle prices are also set to rise: the Disney+ and Hulu bundle will jump to $12.99 from $10.99, and the Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select Bundle will increase to $19.99 from $16.99. The Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Select Bundle Premium, which includes no ads on Disney+ and Hulu and ads on ESPN, will rise to $29.99 from $26.99.
These price adjustments come amid recent controversy surrounding Disney's suspension of 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' following the host's remarks about conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination. The suspension led to backlash, including subscription cancellations and protests. Disney has since reinstated Kimmel, with the show set to return to air on Tuesday. However, major broadcasters Nexstar Media and Sinclair Broadcasting have announced they will not resume airing 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on their ABC affiliates, affecting over 70 stations nationwide.
The price increases also follow Disney's launch of its new ESPN app in August, aimed at driving subscribers to its streaming bundle. As part of the promotion for that launch, Disney is continuing to offer the Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited Bundle plan at a discounted price of $29.99 per month. The unlimited bundle includes live access to all of ESPN’s networks and services, while the select bundle has a more limited offering.
