Daylight Saving Time Ends, Extra Hour of Sleep for Many

Ամփոփում

As daylight saving time concludes, clocks will fall back one hour, granting an extra hour of sleep to many Americans. Discussions continue regarding the potential for permanent daylight saving time.

Daylight saving time officially ends before dawn on Sunday, with clocks set to fall back one hour at 2 a.m. on November 1. This change allows many to enjoy an extra hour of sleep, while also resulting in brighter mornings and earlier evenings.

Most modern devices will adjust automatically, but those with analog clocks will need to set them back manually. While many welcome the additional sleep, there remains a debate about the twice-annual clock changes that have been in place since the Standard Time Act of 1918.

A bill known as the Sunshine Protection Act is currently progressing through Congress, aiming to make daylight saving time permanent. If passed, clocks would spring forward in March and remain there indefinitely, providing more evening daylight during winter months. Advocates argue this would enhance opportunities for outdoor activities after work and school. President Trump has expressed support for the bill, encouraging constituents to contact Senator Tom Cotton, who opposes it due to concerns about children commuting to school in the dark.

Conversely, some experts, including sleep scientists, recommend maintaining standard time year-round, citing benefits for sleep patterns and health. Research has indicated that permanent daylight saving time could increase the risk of vehicle accidents involving pedestrians during darker morning hours.

While states can opt out of daylight saving time with congressional approval, most of the U.S. continues to observe it. Hawaii, most of Arizona, and U.S. territories do not participate in the clock changes. In 2018, Californians voted to allow lawmakers to end daylight saving time, but subsequent efforts to implement this change have not succeeded. Daylight saving time will resume on March 14, 2027.
