Astros appoint Cardinals assistant Randy Flores as general manager
Houston announced the hiring of Randy Flores, formerly the Cardinals' assistant GM and scouting director, as its new general manager, succeeding the previous front-office leadership.
Houston owner Jim Crane said in a press release that the Astros have hired Cardinals assistant general manager and scouting director Randy Flores as the club's new general manager. Crane praised Flores' decade-long impact on the Cardinals and his background in scouting and player acquisition, adding that the organization looks forward to working with him to pursue another championship.
Flores, 51, will hold an introductory press conference with Crane on Monday. The appointment follows earlier speculation that Brewers assistant GM Matt Kleine was the leading candidate, a report that suggested negotiations over title and salary may have stalled.
Flores spent more than ten seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, rising from scouting director to assistant GM. A former left-handed reliever, he appeared in 350 major-league games and earned a World Series ring with the Cardinals in 2006. After retiring, he earned a master’s degree in education, coached at USC, and ran a video-scouting company focused on amateur players.
The Astros, who posted an 81-81 record and a brief Wild Card Series exit last season, face roster challenges as several key players approach free agency. While Yordan Alvarez and Josh Hader are under contract through 2028, shortstop Jeremy Peña, infielder Isaac Paredes and pitcher Hunter Brown will become free agents in the next two years. The club also carries sizable contracts for Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa and other veterans.
Flores will inherit a baseball-operations department seeking to balance immediate competitiveness with long-term roster flexibility, amid a payroll projected to decline to the $210-215 million range by 2027. The organization hopes his scouting expertise can help navigate the upcoming talent and financial decisions.
