Luxury cruise MV Odyssey halts in Cambodia amid soaring fuel costs

摘要

The MV Odyssey, a residential cruise ship, has suspended its world-wide voyage and left more than 200 passengers stranded in Sihanoukville as fuel prices spike following the conflict in the Middle East.

The MV Odyssey, a luxury residential cruise vessel operated by Villa Vie Odyssey, has been forced to suspend its multi-year world itinerary and remain docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after fuel costs surged dramatically. The ship, which departed Belfast in October 2024, was carrying 203 passengers—predominantly Americans—and 156 crew members when it stopped.

The Florida-based operator said the rise in fuel prices, driven by the war in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, made its operating model financially unsustainable. A statement on the company’s website read: "Extraordinary increases in fuel costs have placed our current operating model under unsustainable financial pressure. We are working with residents to coordinate disembarkation and temporary living arrangements, and are supporting residents, crew, and employees as we evaluate restructuring and recapitalization alternatives over the next 60 days."

The company is arranging temporary accommodation for passengers while it explores restructuring options. The monthly fuel cost per cabin in parts of Asia has reportedly risen from $1,800 to $8,000, and oil prices have exceeded $117 a barrel.

Passengers described the situation as a series of compounding problems. Randy Cassingham, a resident, wrote on his blog that the cancellation was anticipated after a series of operational and management issues. Pamela Reckamp, another resident, told NBC News that ship officials had previously asked cabin owners to raise $1 million to fund departure from Ha Long Bay, warning that without the funds the vessel would run out of power within days.

Carol Larson, a 69-year-old Californian who purchased a $120,000 cabin under a long-term residency program, said she still felt the experience was worthwhile despite the setback. She attributed the fuel-price surge to the conflict involving President Donald Trump’s administration, but expressed no regret about her investment, noting that she had accepted the risk from the outset.

The vessel remains at the Cambodian port with no confirmed departure date, while the operator evaluates possible recapitalization and restructuring measures over the coming weeks.
