Villa Vie Odyssey suspends operations amid soaring fuel costs, residents forced to disembark in Cambodia

Resumen

Villa Vie announced a temporary layup of its residential cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey after fuel expenses rose sharply, requiring all passengers to leave the vessel by 2 p.m. in Cambodia.

Villa Vie said the Villa Vie Odyssey will enter a temporary layup after the company could not secure sufficient fuel, prompting all residents to disembark by 2 p.m. today in Cambodia. > "As a result, the Odyssey will enter a temporary layup this afternoon, with crew remaining onboard to maintain the vessel and its essential systems," CEO Kathy Villaba wrote in a message-board post. The company’s statement cited "extraordinary increases in fuel costs" as the reason for halting operations. Villa Vie estimates that monthly fuel expenses per cabin have risen from about $1,800 to as much as $8,000, making it financially untenable to pass the full increase onto residents.

The suspension leaves passengers who had been living on the ship with limited notice to retrieve their belongings and find alternative accommodation. The vessel is currently docked in Cambodia, and crew members will remain aboard to keep essential systems running while the ship is idle.

Villa Vie has faced operational challenges since the Odyssey’s delayed launch in Belfast in 2024, including itinerary changes and reports of onboard service issues. Critics have questioned the long-term viability of residential-style cruise concepts, noting that rising fuel prices have added pressure to an already costly business model.
