Fuel price surge forces MV Odyssey cruise to pause in Cambodia

Summary

The MV Odyssey, a three-year global cruise, has halted its voyage in Sihanoukville due to sharply higher fuel costs, leaving 203 passengers and 156 crew members stranded.

The MV Odyssey, a U.S.-operated cruise vessel marketed as a three-year maritime living experience, has suspended its itinerary at the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville. The ship, which can accommodate 650 passengers, was carrying 203 passengers, most of them Americans, and 156 crew members when the decision was made, according to Cambodian officials.

Villa Vie Residences, the Florida-based operator, said in a press release that monthly operating costs per cabin have risen from about $1,800 to an estimated $6,000-$8,000 because of sharply higher fuel prices in the regions where the ship has been sailing. The company linked the price increase to reduced traffic in the Strait of Hormuz following the conflict in Iran, which has strained fuel supplies in Southeast Asia.

"Fuel costs have risen sharply in the regions where the company has been operating," the statement read.

The operator described the situation as creating "unsustainable financial pressure" and said it had attempted to cut fuel consumption by shortening the itinerary and extending port stays, but the measures were insufficient. Villa Vie Residences said it will provide temporary accommodations for residents while it develops a recapitalization plan over the next 60 days, though no outcome is guaranteed.

Passengers reported receiving only seven hours' notice before being asked to disembark and said they had received little assistance. Some described ongoing issues such as intermittent internet, declining food quality, and repeated requests for additional payments to cover fuel and other expenses. Others expressed hope that the cruise could be revived, with one passenger suggesting a possible resident-led purchase of the ship.

Cambodian authorities have confirmed the ship remains docked with no set departure date.
