Fitness entrepreneur Sam Wood faces bail hearing as new details emerge about his marriage

Résumé

Friends say Wood's wife Snezana sought to leave their marriage before his arrest on domestic-violence charges, while Wood's lawyer requests bail pending a mental-health assessment.

Australian fitness entrepreneur Sam Wood, who denies the domestic-violence charges stemming from an incident in Noosa on October 3, is scheduled to appear before the Supreme Court on November 4 for a bail hearing. Wood has been held at Wolston Correctional Centre in Brisbane for four weeks after a magistrate denied bail on October 15.

According to the Herald Sun, Wood's wife, Snezana Wood, felt trapped in their eight-year marriage, which began after they met on The Bachelor in 2015 and married three years later. A friend told the newspaper that Snezana was looking for a way out and that her concerns were known locally, though neighbors were reluctant to intervene.

The friend also said Snezana did not have access to the couple's finances, despite the couple's wealth from the sale of Wood's fitness business for $71 million in 2022 and a property portfolio that includes a former $6 million Elsternwick home, a $2.7 million Mount Martha residence, and a Brighton home currently listed for $7.15 million.

Additional allegations describe Wood as having a volatile temperament and controlling behaviour, including an incident in which he allegedly threw his wife's clothing onto the front lawn and attempted to obtain her engagement ring without payment.

Wood's lawyer, Matthew Cuskelly, argued that his client suffers from severe depression and needs bail to access mental-health treatment and protect his professional reputation. He also described family tension, stating, "Ultimately, as all families have, there were problems. And my client had been enduring the hardship of attempting to quarantine those problems from his family for some period of time. It was agonising."

Snezana Wood has remained silent on social media since the arrest but has been seen in Melbourne without her wedding ring.
