Michael Douglas Discusses Trust and Communication in Filming Sex Scenes

摘要

The veteran actor explained that before intimacy coordinators were common, actors relied on detailed discussion and mutual trust to stage intimate moments on set.

Michael Douglas said that filming sex scenes requires an "art" that depends on clear communication and trust between performers. Speaking on the podcast "Happy, Sad, Confused," the 82-year-old reflected on his experiences before intimacy coordinators became standard on movie sets.

"The big thing with sex scenes is trust," Douglas said. "And as long as the lady is trusting me — obviously I trust her — it’s like a dance. You’re taking the lead."

He described how actors negotiate each movement in advance, comparing the process to choreographing a fight scene. "You just talk it out slowly. ‘Kiss, kiss, bite. Looking at you. Is it all right to touch your breasts?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘All right, I'm touching your breasts. Kiss. Kiss,’" he explained, adding that the gradual approach helps the scene appear realistic.

Douglas also highlighted the need to make female performers comfortable, noting that crews were often predominantly male in earlier decades. He emphasized that an actor’s role is a small part of a larger ensemble and that the overall quality of a project matters more than individual prominence.

"I’d rather be good in a little movie than lousy in a big part," he said.

The conversation touched on Douglas’s memoir, which recounts personal challenges, and on past on-set relationships that have been disputed by former co-star Lee Purcell. The actor’s remarks provide insight into the evolving practices surrounding intimate scenes in film production.
