Airbnb introduces new rules limiting checkout chores for guests

Airbnb announced an update to its house-rule policy that bars hosts from asking guests to handle time-consuming cleaning tasks before checkout. Effective for reservations booked on or after Nov. 20, 2026, the platform says hosts should not require guests to strip beds, wash and put away dishes, or start a load of laundry. Guests may still be asked to leave used dishes in the sink, gather towels and separate trash and recycling into designated indoor bins.

The company also clarified that hosts can request guests to turn off amenities such as air conditioning when they leave, but should not discourage use of advertised features. All house rules and any guest requests must be listed in the designated section of the property’s listing before a reservation is confirmed; hosts may not add new requirements later via messages, signs, or in-person instructions.

Airbnb warned that imposing cleaning work could negatively affect a host’s reviews. Hosts are prohibited from imposing their own fines, though they may inform guests of potential penalties from homeowners associations, building security, or local authorities. Violations of the new policy will be flagged, with hosts receiving email guidance and an opportunity to appeal. Repeated breaches could lead to reduced listing visibility or other enforcement actions.

Exceptions may be made for specific circumstances, such as requiring guests in bear-prone areas to place garbage in animal-proof containers or limiting shower time during drought-related water restrictions. The update also consolidates standard house rules into seven categories covering overnight guest limits, quiet hours, events, pets, smoking, commercial photography and checkout lock-up procedures. Hosts can contact Airbnb for assistance and may cancel a reservation without fee if a guest breaches a house rule.
