Southern Nazarene University football player dies after weekend injury
Tyler Ulrich, a sophomore defensive back at Southern Nazarene University, died after sustaining a traumatic injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist.
A Southern Nazarene University (SNU) football player died early Tuesday following a serious injury sustained during the team’s loss to Ouachita Baptist on Saturday. The student, sophomore defensive back Tyler Ulrich of Azle, Texas, was taken to a hospital in critical condition after the incident and later passed away.
"Earlier today, Tyler Ulrich, a beloved member of our SNU football team and student body, passed away," SNU President Keith Newman said in a statement. "Tyler sustained a traumatic injury during last Saturday's football game. Since that time, he has been in the hospital, continually surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates, and dear friends."
The university cancelled its upcoming game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University in light of Ulrich’s death. A campus-wide prayer service was held, and counseling resources were offered to students and staff coping with the loss.
Details about the nature of the injury have not been released. A fundraising campaign has been launched to assist Ulrich’s family.
