Pope Leo XIV to undergo lung nodule surgery and hospital stay
Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital for surgery to remove an early-stage lung nodule, with a week-long recovery expected.
The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV will be admitted to Rome's Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday for surgery to remove a lung nodule discovered during recent medical tests. The Holy See press office said the operation will be followed by a week-long hospital recovery, though it did not specify the exact timing of the procedure.
The 71-year-old pontiff disclosed the finding during his Sunday noon prayer, describing the nodule as "early stage" and "circumscribed." > "The doctors believe it's best to take action, so, following their advice, I've decided to have surgery to remove it," Leo said. > "Thank you for your spiritual support, and I entrust myself to your prayers."
The Vatican denied reports that an inflammation prompted the tests, stating that no specific issue led to the examinations. The pope's decision to announce the health matter publicly marks a notable level of transparency in his 17-month pontificate.
On the same day, Leo presided over an audience with the Rome-based charity Circolo San Pietro, receiving a donation and delivering remarks in a strong, clear voice. He also held six private audiences, signed a letter to the outgoing dean of the College of Cardinals, and was expected to continue his schedule, including a week-long conference on ministering to families.
A major pastoral trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru is planned for November 6-17, though it remains uncertain whether the surgery and recovery will affect the itinerary.
