UK Prime Minister Burnham Calls for Revised EU Relations Ahead of November Summit

Prime Minister Andy Burnham told parliament that the United Kingdom must move beyond the current status quo with the EU and outlined priorities for the upcoming UK-EU summit on 20 November.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham told members of parliament that the United Kingdom’s relationship with the European Union needs to change, stating that “sticking with the current status quo is not good enough for Britain.” He said a discussion on future relations is essential for “promoting growth, controlling immigration, upholding our values and security.”

"Worse, it would be a major dereliction of duty" for the government to "turn away" from exploring options for a closer relationship with the EU, Burnham added, emphasizing that his immediate priority is a “successful outcome at the summit” scheduled for 20 November.

Burnham said the British public would “be the boss” at every stage of the process and highlighted several topics expected on the agenda, including a food-and-drink trade deal, linking energy systems, an emissions-trading arrangement and a youth-experience scheme. He urged that the UK “should not turn our backs on this opportunity.”

The prime minister has previously argued that Brexit “has done more harm than good” and that the UK needs a clear long-term strategy with its largest trading partner. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised the Labour government’s approach, claiming it would “unpick” the existing withdrawal agreement.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed optimism about the summit, writing on social media that the EU and the UK have “so much to achieve together” and encouraging ambition for the benefit of citizens on both sides of the Channel.

In a separate part of his speech, Burnham addressed a security incident at RAF Fairford, saying it was “almost certainly directed” by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps. He warned that Britain “will not tolerate these threats.” The incident involved several arrests on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts, with the suspects currently on police bail while investigations continue. The United States has since withdrawn its bombers from the base.
