Police in Gloucestershire arrested several men on suspicion of explosives offences near RAF Fairford, a base used by US forces, prompting a major incident response and evacuation of nearby homes.

Police in the Whelford area of Gloucestershire have arrested multiple men on suspicion of explosives offences, prompting a major-incident declaration and the evacuation of several properties, a police statement said. The Army’s specialist explosive ordnance disposal team is examining several vehicles at the scene.

The arrests occurred close to RAF Fairford, which hosts US B-1 bombers and serves as a forward operating location for US Global Strike Command. A US Air Force spokesperson declined to discuss specific force-protection measures, saying the unit remains vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure the safety of service members, civilians, contractors and their families.

Armed police blocked access to the base’s main gate, and a large emergency-services presence was observed. A government spokesperson said Prime Minister Andy Burnham is being briefed on the incident and that the emergency services acted quickly to detain the suspects and secure the community. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting said the armed forces are on standby 24/7 to protect the country.

The UK previously authorised the use of RAF Fairford for US strikes on Iranian missile sites in the Strait of Hormuz, and later affirmed its readiness to defend against any attacks following warnings from Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
