Trump declares immediate energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Zelenskiy awaits details

Resumen

President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Kyiv is still waiting for specifics and noted ongoing attacks on energy sites.

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that an "energy ceasefire" between Russia and Ukraine was "effective immediately" and that both sides had agreed to it. The statement, posted on his Truth Social platform, did not include details of the arrangement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Kyiv had discussed the announcement with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Justin Trudeau and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and that Ukraine was waiting for further information from the United States. "Ukraine supports the ceasefire, and it is important that Russia support it as well. We are awaiting details from the American side," Zelenskiy wrote on Telegram.

The ceasefire claim came after several days of pressure from the White House for Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries, which Trump has linked to rising diesel prices ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. A source familiar with the situation said the United States had threatened to limit intelligence sharing and weapons procurement under the Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List if Kyiv continued attacks on Russian energy facilities.

Despite the announcement, Russian forces continued to target Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a strike on a heating and power plant in Kharkiv, according to Zelenskiy’s nightly video address. Ukrainian officials also reported new attacks that killed six civilians in Kharkiv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

Zelenskiy reiterated that any ceasefire must be reciprocal, stating that Ukraine would consider elections only if President Vladimir Putin agreed to a 60-day total ceasefire. He added that the war in the Middle East, rather than Ukrainian actions, was a major factor behind global fuel price increases.

U.S. lawmakers expressed concern about a separate diesel supply deal with Russia described by Trump, with Senator Thom Tillis warning that the arrangement could be illegal and jeopardize American lives.
