Horror Thriller "Other Mommy" Leads Weekend Box Office as "The Social Reckoning" Lags

Résumé

"Other Mommy" earned $27.5 million in its opening weekend, while Aaron Sorkin's "The Social Reckoning" opened with $5.5 million and placed fifth.

"Other Mommy," a horror film starring Jessica Chastain as a malevolent doppelgänger, opened with $27.5 million in North America, topping the weekend box office. The movie, produced by Universal and Blumhouse, has a modest $18 million budget and has already grossed $45.19 million worldwide, including $17.69 million from international markets.

Despite a 19% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a D+ CinemaScore, analyst David A. Gross noted that horror titles often perform well despite poor reviews, but warned that "business is going to drop sharply" as audience interest wanes.

Sony's "The Social Reckoning," a R-rated drama written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, earned $5.5 million, placing fifth. The film, projected to open between $7 million and $8 million, holds a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score and a B- CinemaScore. Gross added that "stories about corporate intrigue, money and power have found a home on TV. They lack the cinematic qualities that excite big-screen audiences."

Other releases included the holdover "Verity" with $11.4 million, the "Resident Evil" reboot with $8.3 million, and Brad Pitt's "Heart of the Beast" with $7.1 million. Specialty titles such as "Misty Green," "Musk" and "Fjord" opened in limited venues with modest per-theater averages.

October's overall box-office performance remains soft, posting revenues 23% above the same period in 2025 but still 8% below 2019 levels, prompting studios to rely on upcoming releases like "Street Fighter," "Whalefall" and "Clayface" to boost the month.
