DC's "Clayface" Opens at $24M, While A24 Documentary Leads Box Office

Summary

"Clayface" earned $24 million in its opening weekend, and A24's documentary "You Can See Everything" posted a $19.5 million debut, topping the domestic box office.

DC Studios' "Clayface" opened in 3,458 theaters and earned an estimated $24 million domestically, narrowly surpassing A24's documentary "You Can See Everything," which made $19.5 million in its first weekend of wide release. The horror-infused superhero film, produced on a $44 million budget, also added $19 million from international markets, helping DC Studios recover after the under-performance of "Supergirl."

"You Can See Everything" expanded from 855 to 2,655 locations, reaching $45.1 million in two weeks and becoming one of the highest-grossing documentaries ever. The film has attracted a strong Gen Z audience and is being discussed as a potential Oscar contender for Best Picture.

"A24 invested a reported $7 million in an interesting but complicated idea without a beginning, middle or end, that’s turned into a zeitgeist film about money, dreams, truth and reality," said David A. Gross, publisher of the box-office newsletter FranchiseRe.

"Clayface is a great example of studios taking chances, with DC venturing into R-rated horror and body horror, something that’s certainly not your typical comic book movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak.

Other releases included the stop-motion feature "Wildwood," which debuted in third place with $11.8 million, and the video-game adaptation "Street Fighter," which fell to $8.6 million in its second weekend. The weekend also saw modest openings for "Wicker," "Other Mommy," and several smaller titles.
