Oregon Ducks fall 17-15 to UCLA amid questions over program decisions

Résumé

The Ducks lost to UCLA 17-15, prompting scrutiny of roster spending, coaching choices and on-field execution as the team seeks to meet high expectations.

Oregon fell to visiting UCLA 17-15 on Saturday, a loss that has intensified scrutiny of head coach Dan Lanning's program decisions. The Ducks recorded seven turnovers and managed only 73 rushing yards, while a backup quarterback, Dylan Raiola, struggled after replacing Dante Moore in the previous game. The defense, despite some successes, allowed a 62-yard pass and a long touchdown run in the second quarter.

The defeat adds to a pattern of close losses for a team that has invested heavily in facilities, including a nearly $250 million practice complex still under construction. Lanning acknowledged the lack of clear answers, saying, ">I don’t know the answers to why. Why has it been not great? Because I think there’s been moments and there’s been glimpses of where it’s got a chance to be really successful. I think that’s a good team that we just played, that we were in a battle there all the way down to the last series."

He also noted the importance of donor support, adding, ">The support doesn’t guarantee results, just like hard work doesn’t guarantee results. We’ve got to be better. We’ve got to find a way to be successful."

Wide receiver Evan Stewart highlighted the need for consistent execution, stating, ">It’s the little ones that we’ve got to complete to get to the biggest one."

The loss follows other recent upsets of highly funded programs by less-heralded opponents, raising concerns about preparation and offensive line depth. Lanning said the team is still searching for answers, ">It’s all come together for us quite a bit in the past, and it hasn’t so far this year. We’ve continue to figure out what that looks like."

The Ducks remain in contention but must address the identified shortcomings to sustain long-term success.
