NFL launches probe after referee confronts Cardinals tight end in Giants win

Summary

The league announced an investigation into a heated exchange between an official and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride during Sunday’s 36-24 victory over the New York Giants, prompting calls for accountability from the NFLPA.

The National Football League said it will investigate an interaction between a game official and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride that occurred during Sunday’s 36-24 win for the New York Giants. The incident, captured on video and circulated online, showed the referee raising his voice toward McBride.

NFL Players Association executive director JC Tretter responded on social media, stating, > "This kind of behavior from an official towards a player is unacceptable. Players are consistently held accountable when the roles are reversed. We expect the NFL to hold officials to the same standard."

CBS Sports reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala noted that McBride began the exchange politely, even using the word “please.” The incident was among several confrontations involving officials on Sunday, including referee Adrian Hill’s angry exchange with Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson after a collision, and a penalty assessed to Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel for unsportsmanlike conduct after he used strong language toward an official.

Vrabel told reporters, > "I told him it was a terrible— I'm not going to say effing— call. I've said that 87 times since I've been a head coach. It was nothing derogatory. You'd have to ask him. I think he was a little sensitive."

The league’s review will determine whether any disciplinary action is warranted for the officials involved.
