NFL launches probe into on-field confrontations involving officials, players and coach

Summary

The league announced investigations into verbal exchanges between officials and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride and Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson, while also reviewing a coach's unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The National Football League said it is reviewing two incidents that occurred during Sunday games involving officials and players. One investigation focuses on an exchange between an official and Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride after the Cardinals' 36-24 victory over the New York Giants. A second probe concerns referee Adrian Hill, who appeared angry after Minnesota Vikings linebacker Eric Wilson unintentionally knocked him down.

NFL Players Association executive director JC Tretter responded on social media, calling the behavior "unacceptable" and urging the league to hold officials to the same standards applied to players.

CBS Sports reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala noted that McBride began the interaction politely, using the word "please," and that his strongest remark was "You're ruining the game."

The league’s scrutiny also extended to New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, who received an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after using strong language toward an official. Vrabel told reporters he had described the call as "terrible" many times in his career and did not intend any derogatory meaning.

Officials, players and coaches often have tense interactions, and the league said it will assess whether the conduct on Sunday crossed the line.
