French student protests cited as warning on immigration policy

French student demonstrations over education funding have turned violent, prompting some U.S. commentators to warn that open-border policies could lead to similar unrest.

Student protests that began in Paris over overcrowded classrooms, teacher shortages and limited education funding have spread to several French cities and turned violent, with authorities reporting more than 5,000 arrests and dozens of injuries among staff and students. The unrest intensified after the government presented a 2027 budget that raises education spending by 1.7%, a figure below inflation, according to Reuters. Police used tear gas and rubber bullets in response to incidents of arson, vandalism and assaults, and more than 100 high schools suffered significant damage.

French intelligence agencies told a crisis meeting that the movement was sparked by politicians from the hard-left France Unbowed Party (LFI), though the party denied involvement and accused the government of politicising the protests ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

"The students’ grievances about missing teachers and deteriorating schools were real at first, but dousing a principal in gasoline and attacking firefighters are acts of extreme violence," said Simone Rodan-Benzaquen, senior envoy to Europe at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

In the United States, Fox News co-host Tomi Lahren referenced the French unrest as a "cautionary tale" for American immigration policy, suggesting that open borders could lead to similar disorder. She linked the protests to Joe Biden’s immigration stance, stating that the country is "undoing" previous policies.

The French protests continue to raise questions about education funding, public safety and the political dynamics surrounding upcoming elections.
