Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10, 2025, during a public event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. The incident occurred around 12:20 p.m. local time, shortly after the event began. Kirk, 31, was addressing an audience of approximately 3,000 people as part of his "American Comeback Tour" when a single shot was fired from a nearby building, striking him in the neck.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox described the incident as a "political assassination." Authorities have not yet identified a suspect, and the shooter remains at large. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is leading the investigation and has urged the public to provide any relevant information.
The event had sparked controversy on campus, with an online petition calling for its cancellation receiving nearly 1,000 signatures. Despite the opposition, the university upheld its commitment to free speech and allowed the event to proceed.
President Donald Trump announced Kirk's death on social media, praising him as "Great, and even Legendary." He ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff and condemned the violence. Leaders from both political parties, including former Presidents Obama, Bush, and Clinton, issued statements mourning the loss and calling for national unity and civility.
Kirk was known for his efforts to mobilize young conservative voters and was a close ally of President Trump. He is survived by his wife, Erika Frantzve, and their two children.
