Jack Campbell's early-season struggles spark questions for Detroit Lions defense
All-Pro linebacker Jack Campbell has posted a low Pro Football Focus grade through three games as the Lions adjust their defensive scheme, prompting concerns about his role and the unit's performance.
Detroit linebacker Jack Campbell has drawn criticism after a disappointing start to the season, recording a Pro Football Focus overall grade of 44.2, the 52nd-best among qualifying linebackers. In the first three games he allowed receptions on 12 of 14 targets for 145 yards, two touchdowns and a 149.4 passer rating.
The decline follows a shift in Campbell’s responsibilities after the departure of Alex Anzalone. He is now handling roughly 43 coverage snaps per game, up from just under 36 last season, while the Lions have moved from a primarily man-coverage scheme to a lower-ranking man-heavy approach.
Head coach Dan Campbell has emphasized the need to rebuild trust within the defense. > "We got to get our trust level back. We got to start back from ground level, get back to the basics of what we do. And man, just do your job. Trust it. You got to trust it," he said after the loss to Buffalo.
Analysts suggest that Campbell’s hesitation may stem from the schematic changes and uncertainty about teammate assignments, which can affect his positioning and effectiveness in coverage. The Lions will look to address these issues as the season progresses.
