Detroit Lions assess offensive and defensive line roster battles ahead of training camp
The Lions have identified their starting linemen for 2026, but depth charts on both sides remain uncertain as several players compete for roster spots.
The Detroit Lions have outlined their projected starting offensive and defensive lines for the 2026 season, yet the depth at each position will be decided during training camp. New additions to the offensive line, including Juice Scruggs, Ben Bartch, Larry Borom and Seth McLaughlin, will compete with existing players such as Miles Frazier, Giovanni Manu, Michael Niese and Colby Sorsdal.
On defense, the team faces a complex situation with multiple line roles—nose tackle, three-technique, big end and rush end—requiring versatile players. Ahmed Hassanein is shifting from rush end to big end, while the impact of recent draft picks like Skyler Gill-Howard on Mekhi Wingo’s future, and the roster status of Levi Onwuzurike given his injury history, are under review. The competition also includes the backup nose tackle position and the potential resurgence of Pass rusher Payton Turner.
In a recent episode of the "Midweek Mailbag" podcast, host Erik Schlitt discussed these roster uncertainties, outlining which players are vying for the same spots and the specific roles the Lions need to fill. The show also addressed other topics such as Kerby Joseph’s possible placement on the PUP list, Luke Altmyer’s chances for a backup quarterback role, preseason preparation without joint practices, and a ranking of Dan Campbell-era seasons.
