Patriots quarterback Drake Maybe criticized for erratic play and questionable decisions

Summary

An opposing coach said New England quarterback Drake Maye shows erratic judgment and attempts to emulate star quarterbacks, raising concerns about his performance as the Patriots seek to improve.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has drawn criticism from an opposing coach after a series of turnovers in the team's early 2026 season. The coach described Maye’s decision-making as “erratic judgment — not poor, just erratic,” citing a deep crossing route against the Pittsburgh Steelers that resulted in an interception and a recent fumble against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"He is in the red zone against Pittsburgh, and he doesn't have to, but he sprints up in the pocket, he meets the defender and slides for the sack," the coach said. "He literally sacks himself. (Sunday), he just muffs the ball while passing. Fumbled it and gave it to the other team."

The coach added that Maye appears to be trying to emulate elite quarterbacks, noting that his fundamentals are not consistent and that he often attempts “heroics” while on the move.

"The best players, their fundamentals are impeccable, repeatable. This guy's are not. He has nervous, happy feet. He does not throw off a sturdy platform. He is not real accurate on the move, and tries the heroics," the coach said. "He looks like he is watching (Patrick) Mahomes and (Aaron) Rodgers in primetime games and is at the flag football game on Saturday afternoon trying to play copycat."

The Patriots face a tough schedule ahead, including a Week 4 matchup against AFC East leader Buffalo Bills.
